Union Literary Institute Preservation Society, Inc.

In 1989 The Union Literary Institute Preservation society, Inc. (ULIPS) began to promote and preserve the historic charter, association and architecture of the Union Literary Institute in Greensfork Township of Randolph County, Indiana.  In 2001, the mission was expanded to promote the preservation of the Greenville Negro Settlement, a.k.a. Longtown of Darke County, Ohio, and Randolph County, Indiana.

Two structures of the early settlement that still stand today are the Union Literary Institute schoolhouse and the James and Sophia Clemens Farmstead.  Due to the ravages of time and weather these buildings are deteriorating at an alarming rate.  The ULIPS purchased the Clemens Farmstead in 2002 and is raising funds to restore the farmstead.  James Clemens was the first man of color to purchase land in the Darke County Township in 1819. James Clemens was the founding father of the settlement and the Clemens’s were conductors in the Underground Railroad.  James Clemens also helped establish the Union Literary Institute and his sons were on the first board.
